    Quote:
From a narrative standpoint, it actually would make much more sense to imprison or execute him, much for the reasons Daenerys explained during the trial. It is factually correct that, without having brought an army to fight with him, the risk of betrayal far outweighs anything a lone cripple could add to the battlefield. While we know what has transpired and that he is true to his word, why should they accept his word when all his actions show no conviction behind it (especially after all the incidents that lead to the downfall of previous would-be kings and conquerors in the show)?

Not all his actions. As Brienne pointed out, he helped her toward keeping her own oath to Catelyn and saved Brienne from the bear when he didn't have to. He betrayed Tywin and Cersei by freeing Tyrion, and his breaking his oath to kill the Mad King comes with a huge caveat.
