Quote:PS - As feared, this was trying to make 'nice' moments. The dialogue just isn't there. Tormmund's story was just crap, didn't make me laugh. Bran was quite good, but Jaime, Brienne and Tyrion deserved much better dialogue.
Tormund's story did leave something to be desired, but that's a minor complaint. I loved this episode. Episode 1 seemed rushed with all the reunions feeling like they were checking off a list. This episode was refreshing and gave the characters plenty of room to breathe. The show's writers clearly don't have the same talent with great characterization that Martin does, so since leaving the books during season 5, the writers have put more and more focus on spectacle over character. This episode was a much needed corrective about what is the story's heart and soul.
Each new arrival - Jaime, then Theon, then Dolorous, Beric, and Tormund - joining with the already gathered generated a greater sense of the stakes. A large number of the named characters are going to die in the next episode so this episode was a way to send them off, to say farewell. Brienne got to shine the most - her standing up for Jaime, her taking pride in Podrick’s improvement, Jaime knighting her, Tormund’s interest in her - so this probably means she’s doomed.
Episode 1: B
Episode 2: A
It's not the story itself that's hilarious, it's the entire setting, the premise of the scene! Just go and watch all the side-glances before he started his story and his reaction after it, maybe you'll figure it out...
Anyway, apart from gripes I've mentioned before, I also really liked the episode, as it's usually interesting to see people try and come to terms with their impending death in such situations.
