The Good:

Daisy Ridley is fantastic and fully inhabits the character of Rey with great vitality.

Han Solo and Chewbacca are back in all their former glory.

BB-8 works as the new R2.

C3-PO makes a funny first appearance.

This world feels like it has some weight again now that not everything is CGI.

In the Middle:

John Boyega is good but Finn's character arc of a rebelling stormtrooper didn't feel fleshed out.

Lupita Nyong'o's Maz Kanata is okay as a Yoda-ish character.

The Bad:

It doesn't function as a standalone movie. It leaves open major questions that really don't need to be left hanging. Why was Ren left alone on a dessert planet and who raised her? Yeah, she's probably Luke's daughter, and she was left like Luke was left on Tatooine. But if it's that obvious (she's meant to inherit his lightsaber!), there's no point in hiding it. Why did Kylo Ren go to the dark side? I guess Snoke is at least partly responsible, but without a reason, we don't know what motivates his character.

Snoke is a terrible name.

Kylo Ren starts off as a badass, but then Finn puts up a decent fight against him with a lightsaber and the Rey, with no training, beats him with little explanation.

Kylo Ren shouldn't be named Ben. Han and Leia barely had any relationship to Kenobi.

Kylo Ren is practically whiny Anakin from the prequels and that's not the image you want to dredge up.

How and why would anyone have a map to Luke Skywalker?

Poe Dameron is a purely generic and uninteresting hotshot fighter pilot.

Captain Phasma, the coolest looking stormtrooper ever, gets to do nothing

Domhnall Gleeson is too young and unimposing to be a General.

Why do only Han and Chewie go with Finn to the Starkiller? Surely a dozen more Resistance fighters would drastically increase the probability of a successful mission.

Han Solo's fate on the catwalk was too predictable and the scene didn't have sufficient dramatic buildup. When you walk over a giant chasm, you know it's not going to end well for someone.

Why wouldn't Leia go see Luke at the end?

I guess given the story as written, Luke's appearance had to be saved until the end, but it felt anticlimatic.

There's too much retreading of A New Hope's story beats. It feels lazy. They've already destroyed the Death Star twice. We didn't need to rehash that again. We don't need another catina scene.

I think Maz Kanata is Snoke. Maz sounds a lot like both a synonym for
hypnosis, and a confusing labyrinth. Kanata sounds a lot like katana, a
sword.
