Rey only started to use the Force when she pushed back against Kylo. She didn't know she was doing "The Jedi Mind Trick" on the guard. She took a chance. If she can get into Kylo's mind, maybe she can get into someone else's I imagine was her thought.

As for the lightsaber training, it worked for me. Rey established earlier she knew how to fight when she took out the two thugs trying to steal BB-8. In terms of melee combat, all we've seen from Kylo Ren was a room didn't stand a chance against his lightsaber. We have no knowledge of how much training he's had in lightsaber combat.

Also he was fueled by anger and was losing control. She started winning when she let the Force in to guide her actions.

So are Yoda, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Luke all Mary Sue's as well? I like the idea of her having raw untested Force powers.
