Also there is this old Kenobi line "Your father wanted you to have this" (or something to that effect), which I've heard repeated several times in conversations about Star Wars. It's supposed to be something Ben said to Luke when he first gave him the lightsaber. I haven't seen New Hope in a long while, so i'm wondering: is that line even real? Probably just something people made up that never actually happened. Because if it did happen, isn't it just a plain lie Kenobi told Luke?

That line is accurate. The exact line is "Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it." I suppose you could say Kenobi is lying to Luke, but if it's a lie, it's because the prequels were poorly written. There are a number of inconsistencies between the original trilogy and the prequels. For example Kenobi is apparently Yoda's pupil according to the original films. That's not the case in the prequels.
