Well so far it is more interesting then season 1. Only thing I can say I liked about season 1 was that it wrapped up loose ends about Data

Season 2 has the benefit of Q being involved.

So far this is not an alternate or mirror universe, it is the original Trek timeline altered by Q into a very Dystopian version that is much like the mirror universe.

However we know from DS9 that the Terran Empire collapsed thanks to reforms done by Mirror Spock.

The Borg Queen can sense the time disruptions and calculates that it originates in the year 2024 in L.A. and that there is a "watcher" that can help.

So, they know WHEN they have to go to so they can fix things. The trick is how to time travel as that tech still doesn't exist.

Well Picard does mention how Kirk's Enterprise did the slingshot affect a few times.....

And with the aid of the Borg Queen to handle the math computations they just now need to get away long enough to make the time jump.

So who is this "watcher"? Also my history of the Federation and its origins are a bit hazy as I stopped paying attention to Trek sometime ago, so what event in 2024 could have been changed to create this? The First Contact event wasn't until 2065.

Also Q appears to be a bit unstable.
