It has its moments, but its tone is so dramatically heavy that it's exhausting.

It actually reminds me of the way the in-universe movies are written in "The Boys". "The Boys" has a few scenes where the characters are acting in movies parodying heavy drama. Like the scene where Queen Maeve comes out of the closet in an in-universe movie. What those scenes parody, Discovery plays straight.
