Her death might have meant more if they hadn't waited until her death episode before giving her any characterization at all.

I couldn't agree more.
I am happy for the actress who got to keep her job and come back as a human after she couldn't cope with the make up. It also provided a nice story with a bitter end for Airiam. I feel the character with that backstory could have been explored more. Tragic, sweet, asks the question where tech and humanity ends, sort of like a soft Robocop.
