I really think that while killing him as an error, I can't help but think that was the franchise way of telling Shatner that they were done with him.

However reviving Kirk as part of a movie or a storyline within a series could be done.....just please CGI de-age and trim him down a bit....

I'm going to level with you.
Star Trek is now bigger than Kirk and especially bigger than Shatner. Given what we now know about how Shatner behaved throughout his career and continues to behave... people on Quora have actually met him, or claim to, and he is just a horrible horrible person.
James Doohan appears to have a nice guy, as was Deforest who was also said to be lovely. Nimoy had a good rep all his life.
I just think that if Shatner was truly remorseful or sympathetic or gave a damn he would have a better rep by now, instead it seems to be getting worse.
Seeing Pike in action has also made me feel that now we have a Captain of the Enterprise who seems a better role model and could if written well turn out to have been a better Captain than Kirk.

I used to deeply admire Kirk, my wife said I had similar outlooks to the character and personality quirks... but I can't get past Shatner.

And Pine although I think he is a fave actor of mine and is fanastic... I didn't feel he was playing Kirk but Han Solo.
