Been a lifelong original series fan and I just discovered DS9 and am addicted.
Yes, I'm late to the party, because TNG turned me off that whole era for so long.

I love DS9. It was very character driven which most Trek shows aren't IMO. When the show first started it looked like a bunch of random characters thrown together that didn't fit but they really built up everyone into something interesting and built a great mythology.

    I get that same feeling.

It's like the Deep Space Nine crew all have the ideals, emotions and attitudes of the original series, and are forced to deal with a galaxy run by Next Generation people.

If you haven't watched Voyager yet...don't bother. It's everything you hate about TNG without any of the good aspects. \:\)

After exercising downstairs and watching DS9 on Netflix, I came up a couple of times and Voyager was on BBC america...
So I learned that lesson the hard way.

The behind the scenes writers arguing about the Captain's personalty (and using scripts to put the arguments on screen) helped a bunch I'm sure.

That's the thing with DS9, its not an attempt to rehash the original series, but with more hitting you over the head with moral lessons, beige furniture and ugly pajamas.

The stationary setting forces different kinds of stories set in that universe, and since its stationary, organic growth of characters and their relationships are a natural outcome.

Most importantly, they're not afraid to be silly, or go to dark places, and have them next to each other...cause that's life.
