Word is, he didn't approve of what the showrunners wanted to do in DS9 just before he died and his wishes were ignored. Think about that the next time you feel glad his rules are thrown out.

I am very happy with the final product that is DS9. So I'm for throwing the rule out.

DS9 is one thing, but Discovery is supposed to be a Prequel to the Original Series so dumping the rule makes absolutely no sense. That's like creating a TV show about a utopia, then 50 years later, making a prequel set ten years before the previous series that ignores what the original is all about. It completely undermines everything that Gene established about Star Trek.

The rule wasn't followed in the original series. Most of the drama of any particular episode revolved around when Kirk, Spock or McCoy disagreed with the other 2. Particularly McCoy...McCoy wasn't like the weak willed fops of the next generation era...he had fire in his belly and disagreed passionately with his superiors yet still managed to do his job.

The rule was only followed in TNG and Voyager. And the shows were all the weaker for it.

And that ain't Star Trek. They aren't even trying to make it Star Trek. If they wanted to throw out some of Gene's rules, they shouldn't have made the show a prequel and used the Kelvin Timeline instead.
