Yes the BBC wants to save face, but there comes a time when you just have to admit that you screwed up. They changed the Doctor to a woman, the fans were polarized on a level that rivaled the effect the Star Wars sequels had on Star Wars fans. Many left the show before watching the Whitaker eps, some left after because they were terrible. They just need to come up with some temporal divergence story that shows that the Doc Whitaker era is an alternate timeline that will have some ramifications to the main time line, we return to the main timeline where Doc 12/Capaldi regenerates into the Doc 13 of the main timeline. Have a storyline where the two 13's have to team up and resolve the big threat to both timelines. As to sexism complaints, simply make sure that the Doctor has capable female companions that can pick up on what the Doctor is doing with minimal explanation and show that they can handle themselves in tough situations without always screaming for help like Susan would do. Romana 1 and 2, Ace, Rose, Clara all come to mind as fitting that description. Sara Jane also but she had a tendency to be captured a lot, almost like Lois Lane awaiting Superman to save her. In fact, perhaps the Brigadier's daughter could join the Doctor for some adventures and travel in the TARDIS. | |||||||
