Yes, I think the die is now cast here - the evidence is undeniable that the mass audience is actively avoiding this era of Doctor Who. It is actively stepping aside when it comes on, and only comes back to BBC1 when it has finished. These are facts.

Do you assume there are a lot of couch potatoes in the UK who just throw on a channel and watch whatever is on for hours at a time?

Yes. It is a fact that a potion of the audience do switch on to a channel and show and only half watch it, if at all... either they are entertaining friends, with family, doing the ironing, or whatever. The television is on as 'background noise'.

But what you are commenting on is the visible reality shown by the overnight results that the BBC1 audience actively tends to step aside when Doctor Who is on, and only comes back once it is finished.

For a sample of that in effect:

16/02/2020
[BBC1] Doctor Who: The Haunting of Villa Diodati - 7.10pm (3.86m overnight viewers)(Countryfile 6.10pm 4.91m )
[BBC2] Ski Sunday - 7pm
[ITV] Dancing on Ice - 6pm till 8pm (4.63m overnight viewers)
[CH4] The Great Pottery Throwdown - 7pm
[Ch5] Secrets of Royal Palaces (documentary) 7pm

23/02/2020
[BBC1] Doctor Who: Ascension of the Cybermen- 7.10pm (3.71m overnight viewers)(Countryfile 6.10pm 4.84m )
[BBC2] Russia, with Simon Reeve - 7pm
[ITV] Dancing on Ice - 6pm till 8pm (4.63m)
[CH4] The Great Pottery Throwdown - 7pm
[Ch5] Royal Protocols:Breaking the Rules (documentary) 7pm

01/03/2020
[BBC1] Doctor Who: The Timeless Children- 6.50pm (3.78m overnight viewers)(Countryfile at 6.10pm Gained 4.44m ) While just after Doctor Who 'The Antiques Roadshow' had 4.41 million watching, on the night.
[BBC2] Russia, with Simon Reeve - 7pm
[ITV] Dancing on Ice - 6pm till 8pm (4.14m)
[CH4] The Great Pottery Throwdown - 7pm
[Ch5] All the Queen's Horses (documentary) 7pm

The ratings for Season 12 therefore looked like this on the overnights:

Dancing on Ice (ITV 6pm): 5.13m, 4.51m, 4.52m, 4.42m, 4.49m, 4.84m, 4.63m, 4.39m, 4.14m.
Countryfile(BBC1 6.10pm): 5.04m, 5.13m, 5.23m, 5.07m, 5.24m, 4.91m, 4.84m, 4.44m.
Doctor Who (BBC1 7.10pm): 4.88m, 4.60m, 4.19m, 4.04m, 4.21m, 3.97m, 3.81m, 3.86m, 3.71m, 3.78m.

After Doctor Who on BBC1 was a combination of either The Antiques Roadshow or Call the Midwife, both outperforming Doctor Who.

Doctor Who very clearly the sick-man of the Sunday evening television schedules - that is not my opinion, it is a visible reality.
