I had thought beforehand that 2.40 would be the very lowest bar this episode would meet, so once again I under-estimated the Audience's actual apathy to Chris Chibnall/Jodie Whittaker Doctor Who.

In a way it is a shame. I think it was an episode that was well advertised beforehand, the trailer looked filmic, exciting visually, but as soon as the three cast showed up in it it went from filmic to bottom of the barrel Children's television - this is how the three main cast approach the series. Children's television, for the under ten's. And yet it is shown on BBC1, evening prime-time television.

It's a problem that was there from the very start with this series - you can have an exceptionally well made product visually, but if you have cast a lead actor who approaches it as nothing but children's television, then you have a product with very limited mass appeal.
I felt with the trailer that this was very evident - it wasn't the characters or actors selling this piece, it was the visuals. And was edited as such.

But then, that misjudgement in the selling point was only one of the problems with this revamped series as a whole.

What a disaster.

If Russell Davies had not stepped in then I doubt very much the BBC would have recommissioned another series at this stage... spare a thought for Davies as he watches this apathetic response from the British public. Because his name and reputation is about to go on the line with this show. \(coffee\)

Out of interest AC - I have read that The Antiques Roadshow over on BBC2 was a repeat? And still scored higher than Doctor Who (I've read either figures of 2.3 or 2.4)?

If you have knowledge of the ratings for the news over on ITV, or indeed for Countryfile at 8pm, I would be very interested! It appears that we are seeing the same effect that happened with series 12, with the BBC audience stepping aside when Doctor Who comes on and only coming back once it has ended.... \(wilt\)
