True, but at least he has a track record of producing an enjoyable product. That is more than can be said for the most recent show runner.

He also has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of television in terms of diversity and LGBTQ representation. None of which is a bad thing in itself, but apply the wrong amount in the wrong place at the wrong time and the results can be pretty disastrous.

He changed the dynamic of the series vastly during his first run. The Doctor having an implied romantic/sexual relationship with companions, the first openly pansexual character, the Doctor's first gay kiss and so on.

That may have been as far as he could go in 2005. But this isn't 2005 any more. We have a new management at the BBC with a more strident diversity policy and five seasons of Doctor Who that have pushed those policies as much as they can. He may well feel he now has a platform to push things even further. Yes, I dare say he'll deliver good scripts, but if he's also delivering changes that will alienate the viewers, doubling down on the last five series, then what's the point? The show can't afford to drop much further in the ratings.

It is not a promise that it will result in repeated success by any means though.

Repeating himself isn't on the cards. In a recent interview he said something like 'It's going to be different. If it wasn't going to be different, then I wouldn't have come back'.

If anyone out there thinks he's going to reset the clock back to 2005-2010, I think they're going to be very disappointed.
