Must they be? No. Will they be? Probably.

I did not like the regeneration into different genders much and still do not care for it a ton in the end but I do not see them switching quite yet.

It is not a bad idea to have a woman in the role through one form or another and potentially interesting stories can be told, but bad stories are told at the same time diminishing both.

I also generally think you need a pretty strong actor to play the Doctor that ideally has alot of presence. I am not sure that Jodi Whiticker consistently does that in the few episodes I have seen of her. She is a good actor but I am not always buying her in the role as much as I have the others that had more of a stage presence.

I think there are women who have that aura and probably many more that are more unknowns. I mean Kate Blanchet for instance always has an aura to her and controls the screen when she is on it.
