You are pointing out the difference between populist mass-audience entertainment (the Eccleston/Tennant/Smith years) and agenda driven entertainment - which is what we have now,
You see it happening with Star Trek. The Original series and TNG were pop-entertainment, made for escapism and the imagination of a broad spectrum of young people and open-minded adults. Today 'Star Trek' is being made to promote certain agenda's and is aimed at very particular (niche) demographics... and so these two shows have drifted away from being of a mass audience all-ages appeal and instead are content to fester on chasing the sort of audience demograghics that don't actually have any interest in these shows anyway.
You can look on at it as being a demonstration of what happens when the new Producers are not actually interested in the series itself, but their own agenda's and careers. Or you can just see it as shameful vandalism of a series that doesn't deserve these people on it.
Too bad that the Dr could not have cross over with Star trek, as have read where they were very close to have him and ST TNG crew meet each other, but then the series was cancelled!
easy way to have them brought together would be to have Q send Enterprise off to meet Borg or Cyberman, and meet the Dr!
