Quote:If enough fans speak up then the BBC may have no choice but to undo this.
Quote:How many times has the franchise retconned or ignored things it previously did? Continuity has always been fluid in Doctor Who
This is a myth put out by nuWho showrunners to cover their own shortcomings, or to enable them to be dismissive about arbitrary changes they've made that have been attacked by fans.
Continuity in the original series was NEVER fluid.
Occasionally mistakes were made by writers and or script editors which made it to screen, but 99% of the time they could be explained away (If the production team couldn't do it, the fans certainly could). Production teams always tried their best to adhere to continuity whenever they could. I can only think of one case off the top of my head where continuity was deliberately ignored at script stage.
Quote:Of course this is all presuming that Chibnall doesn't have a surprise for us that undoes all this and reveals this to be yet another elaborate attack on the Doctor.
Not going to happen, unfortunately.
If this was just a continuity problem that only affected Doctor Who, then it would be fixable. But it goes WAY beyond that.
This cuts to the very core of the BBC's ethos and policies on diversity which they strengthened back in 2015. Chibnall's Doctor Who has been a flagship show for those policies both in front of and behind the cameras.
The Doctor is now female, and started life as a female, and an ethnically diverse female at that. There's no way in hell they're going to take ANYTHING away from a female, nor a minority.
This is canon now, and we're stuck with it.
