But I'd say that most information isn't usually a full invention of the data, it's usually a disagreement about what data counts and how to interpret it if it does count. And that's not even bearing in mind general context. But even by that definition I'd say the accusations against Rogan are pretty flagrant examples of special pleading. The lobbyists and pundits that regularly appear on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News regularly (though not exclusively) peddle misinformation that get far less careful scrutiny than a Rogan guest who turns out to be a Crank. I would argue by any measure the Chamber of Commerce and the US State department are open purveyors of misinformation, and I mean in the direct sense of misrepresenting data and in certain cases openly lying. Their political reps regularly appear on the cable channels and network news to VERY little scrutiny. I am worried that this interest in misinformation is fairly curiously selective and sudden.

I would both agree and disagree.

I do not think in Rogan's case it is like this is out of the blue. He is peddling various falsehoods about COVID19, treatment, vaccines and so on by having guests on and more or less supporting their views.

It is not a more general consideration of half-truths, lies and so on used by political entities.

I think there are countless examples of that just being done in state craft in general. Not total truth, not total lies but misrepresentation.

The Trump administration was probably the worst on many of these fronts, but hardly unique. Consider some of them about focusing on immigrants commiting rape or killing people. It happens, but it is not the full context and the goal is to build support for policies that do not even reflect the full reality of the situation, just a very specific point of view.

Or the Bush administration making up justification for invading Iraq and Afganhastan after 2001. There was some evidence, but it was so bare bones that it was meaningless upon examination. That was one of the biggest failures by the media in my life time.

But that governments lie to varying degrees is not in question. Why Rogan is being grilled is hardly because he is innocent and being picked on by a cruel big brother. He deserves criticism, so do any crank and any person that says things that provides false information that could hurt someone.
