Quote:Lots of them, including my online interactions. I'm not arguing that morality comes from God but that in general: believing that a supernatural entity will hold you to account creates a fear and anxiety that atheists don't have. This doesn't automatically make religious people more moral, just that there's a part of their belief system that consciously or subconsciously adds a mental restriction that atheists don't have. Religious people sometimes ignore this fear and anxiety, but deep down, they are still bothered that they offended a supernatural being that will remember and make them accountable.
Quote:1) And you don't think that's a terrible way to live your life? On your knees cowering in fear from a god who supposedly loves you?
Quote:2) The irony being, of course, you're cowering in fear from a being who isn't there. Kind of like never growing out of being afraid of the bogey man as a kid.
Quote:3) If your argument were true, why are there so many unethical religious people (And that runs the gamut from ordinary people right up to the heads of churches)?
Ironically you run into the problem of religious people more or less rooting for someone to get their punishment. Which seems unethical on its face. To root for eternal damnation for someone.
Quote:4) The counter argument is that atheists who are good and do good do so because we have no expectation of a paradise after death. We understand that life is finite and thus precious. We are good because we simply WANT to be good, not because we're forced to be under duress.
To say nothing of the conflicts in theology on works vs accepting Jesus alone. In some models you do not need to do a damn good thing in your life other than accepting Christ and a person that does good and lives like the Bible wanted otherwise would go to Hell.
At times it is a weird situation.
Although I have met athiests with confused philosophies too, just easier to point out some of the theological ones.
Look Raist bunnies...
