Originally, tipping was given to people in restaurant/hotel that would take in charge your culinary experience. Most restaurant/hotel will not do that.

Depends on the place, I guess. When I worked as a dishwasher in my high school and college days, the waitresses ran the restaurant. There was allegedly a manager but he was irrelevant. The waitresses wanted tips so they wanted good, hot food delivered promptly - and so they rode herd on the kitchen staff, and also on me if plates, silverware or cups were running low.

In north America, regardless of being taken in charge or not, people expect you to tip and it is very rude not to.

At least 20% is easy to calculate. Move the decimal point one position to the left and double the number. Then round up to the nearest dollar.

What disgust me about tipping are bosses that justify paying their employee less because hey are subject to receive tips.

Yet a waitressing job can pay pretty well when tips are figured in. It's one of the best paying jobs a high school or college student can get. And it's very difficult work. I, for one, couldn't do it.

The waitresses made considerably more than I did as the dishwasher. I made minimum wage plus maybe a dollar or two per hour.
