Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

A year ago I reviewed the 8th Massacre movie Leatherface but I had never gotten around to seeing this 7th installment until now. Unfortunately I watched in on Blu-Ray so the 3D effect is lost.

I was surprised when we start off with clips from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 1974 in a ‘previously on’ segment. The reason is so we can see what happened the day after that movie ended. The local sheriff along with a lynch mob surround the Sawyer house to put an end to the cannibal clan. In the original movie there were only like 4 family members but now there are at least a dozen. Stunt casting has Gunnar Hansen (the original Leatherface), Bill Moseley (Chop-Top from TCM2) and Marilyn Burns (the original final girl) as Sawyer family members. The lynch mob burns down their house killing them all, it would seem. As the police dig through the ruins of the burned house, one deputy finds a woman with a baby. He takes the baby as the woman dies.

Now it’s the present day, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that Heather (Alexandria Daddario) is the grown-up baby. Which if she’s acting her age would make the present day around 2000 but people have modern cell phones. She suddenly finds out she’s adopted and heads down to Texas to claim her inheritance. She takes her boyfriend, her girl friend and her boyfriend along for the ride. They also pick up a hitchhiker which is usually a bad thing in these movies.

They drop the hitchhiker at Heather’s inherited home, the Sawyer house (didn’t it burn down? Must be a different one) as they head into town for gas or supplies or something. This hitchhicker isn’t in cahoots with the cannibals, he is the first victim of Leatherface who is hiding in the basement.

In town our heroes are hassled by the local sheriff Hartman who had been the leader of the angry mob back in 1974, I think. He gives the kids some vague warnings to watch their backs.

The kids end up back at the Sawyer house and get chased around by Leatherface who kills all of them except the girl friend (Tania Raymonde), I’m not sure if she lived or died.

It all ends up with Heather, Leatherface, and Sheriff Hartman in some factory (slaughterhouse, probably) and when push comes to shove, blood is thicker than water. Heather tosses Leatherface the chainsaw and says “do your thing, Cuz” as he offs the evil sheriff. Hmmm.

I realize now this has some continuity with the next film, Leatherface. They both cite Verna Sawyer (nee Carson) as the matriarch the clan, we actually see her in that movie. The pregnant girl at the beginning is her daughter and Heather her granddaughter. We also meet a couple of the Hartman clan who hate the Sawyers and tend to be sheriffs. There was a Sheriff Hartman in the next movie, too.

Production value was decent, story was extremely familiar ground until the twist at the end which may cause more groans than applause.
