Subj: Contraversial opinion: The Shawshank Redemption isn't very good
Posted: Mon Apr 06, 2015 at 05:43:17 pm EDT (Viewed 788 times)

Does anyone agree with me? Can anyone convince me otherwise?

My criticisms:
- Almost no female characters (I do get why, but I don't like it).
- Ridiculously/needlessly villainous characters (for example, what was the Warden's motivation for being a villain?).
- Cliched premise of the good guy wrongly accused.
- Cliched wise old black man stereotype.
- Hokey/sappy dialogue and plot.
- Homophobia.

The one thing I liked was the scene featuring the old man who couldn't adapt to life outside the prison. That saved the film from being forgettable. But I keep seeing this movie in people's Top Ten lists, and I just don't get it.
