Subj: Just What Is The Ceiling for an Audio-Release Sale....

I'm not an expert, but I am reasonably knowlegable on Doctor Who audio scarcity. I have thought till now that the rarest Doctor Who audio on CD is the BBC releases of the two Jon Pertwee-led radio plays produced in the early 1990s, these average around £50 upwards, and yes, are very scarce. But with their now enormous back catalogue and their early years of material deleted from their physical stock-for-sale a good deal the publishers early releases are now very very sought after in physical form - I myself just had to break my own imposed bidding limit and pay £18 to get my hands on 'The Uncertainty Principle', a Second Doctor companion chronicle and key chapter in the story of Zoe Herriot. After months of watching I had realised that there was no way it was ever going to turn up cheap, £18 is relatively cheap for this release too, like others it is now extremely scarce and very sought after with bids soaring over the £20 mark when it occasionally comes up for sale. The same goes for Big Finish's now largely forgotten Sarah-Jane Smith series they released in 2003/4, deleted with the arrival of the David Tennant series as the BBC didn't want it clouding public perceptions and licencing of the character. The final disc/story 'Snowblind' is particularly scarce, and if you do see it you will only buy it at somewhere over the £20 mark. A mark that is sure to only increase as years go by and the range becomes more and more sought after by fans and collectors.

But... realistically there is a limit yes? a limit no fan would cross in paying for a mere CD release?

Well, consider The Chimes of Midnight, one of the early 8th Doctor releases and a much praised story. On E-Bay, the 30th August, a copy of this story sold for a phenomenal - £99! Just over £100 once you add the postage.

Incredible. And no, it's NOT gold plated...
